Picked this week - 15th June 2014

I've had a bust time this week in the garden and at the allotment just picking and harvesting!
Most days my lunch-time salad leaves have come from the garden with some spinach from the allotment.
It's been a good week for radishes - in a variety of colours - and some over-wintered spring onions

more rhubarb

and lots and lots of strawberries that I'm having to find new ways to eat up!

..and a lot of new season crops - a small cucumber

courgette

peas from the allotment

and mangetout peas from the garden

 broad beans

and a vase full of 'weeds'

Avoiding the mice

cabbages and cauliflowers for autumn
It seems like we're back to Winter or early Spring sowing seeds in the back porch instead of in the greenhouse or open ground. But we've had a lot of seeds dug up and eaten recently, probably by mice, so decided to keep the re-settings safe from harm. The peas and beans seem to attract them most but they also dug up brassica seedlings and left bean husks in the pots!

Picked this week - 8th June

This is the absolute last week of masses of spinach - the patch has now been dug up for potatoes!

Fortunately there's more lettuce ready to pick

 and a variety of radishes

 More rhubarb

Best thing this week though has to be strawberries - really cropping well now but I'm worried about the amount of rain we're having - much more and the fruit will be rotting not ripening :(

June in the Garden

June's the month when the huge oriental poppies take over, in every shade of pink and red

Anything smaller and less showy tends to get overlooked a bit

the old rose bush straggling up the birch tree

Foxgloves starting to reach for the sky

Path to the greenhouse covered in flowers and strawberries

Glad to see these two bits of flower beds by the walls filling up

and for once, pictures of the front garden...with more poppies..

pyracantha and hardy geraniums by the door

and love in a mist and aquilegias

Picked this week - 1st June 2014

It's a very exciting moment as,

among the standard fare of lettuce, spinach, radish and rhubarb, I picked the first strawberries this week!

Not many so far but I was surprised to find them at all as it seems a little early. Hopefully with some sunny days there'll be lots ripening soon...

Checking up on the allotment

After a few days at the seaside it's time to check on the allotment.

We had sunshine but at home it rained every day!

Potatoes springing up.
