July in the Garden - flowers

 I don't 'do' bedding plants so at this time of year my garden tends to looks a bit dull with lots of floppy greenery hiding the flowers.


They're still peeping through here and there though

  and the lavenders are still trying to take over the path!

To The Rescue!

 pottering round the garden centre last weekend, I came across these rather sad looking plants on the reduced table - a droopy delphinium and several trays of lobelia. Never one to abandon a tired plant (especially when only 20p each) I've now re-housed them, given them some desperately needed water and they're looking much better.

 I'm hoping they'll turn out as lovely as these 'rescued' pansies

and this blueberry which was just a sad twiggy thing this time last year and is now ready to flower and perhaps even fruit :)

have the usual crop of self-seeded flowers growing in the veg patch

love in a mist by the cabbages

welsh poppies sneaking in between the onions

but also some new-comers this year

lobelia under the patio table - has to be self-set from over wintered seed as I haven't grown any this year.

chard among the leeks - either self set from last year's chard or some of last year's seed which didn't germinate then

wild rocket - self set on the opposite side of the path

alpine strawberries - growing and fruiting all on its own

oregano - tried for years to get marjoram to grow without success. last year I was given a packet of greek oregano - this grew much better, survived the cold winter and has sent up seedlings all over the garden

we grew potatoes last year in amongst the runner beans - obviously we didn't lift all of them!

these lavender seedlings have been growing for years in a window box, just above a couple of lavender plants. at first I thought they were another herb I'd sown and forgotten but now they're larger the scent is more obvious. waiting to see their flowers as the two plants nearby are different types of lavender.

bulbs and weeds

a mild sunny morning with blue sky and less wind than yesterday - though we've missed the gales forecast for elsewhere this week. started out to plant some bulbs in the garden - these are mainly ones received through freecycle so, although there's obviously daffodils, tulips and crocus amongst them, it's going to be a bit of a surprise when they flower. anyway, bulb planting led to trying to lift some more of the campanula and a bit of general weed clearing - no matter how much of the campanula is lifted, it still grows back.
still have antirrhinums, nasturtiums and lobelia flowering well and some odd bits of welsh poppies; a couple of flowers on the pinkperennial geranium; winter jasmine and the hardy fuchsias are both flowering; seen buds on polyanthus this morning, a yellow one, I think.
