The wet weather this summer has been lovely for slugs and snails. Their increased number has meant the loss of a lot of veg from the garden - lettuce has been eaten away; the borlotti and French Blue lake beans that should have climbed up wigwams were nibbled away at ground level. Now the evil creatures have taken to attacking strawberries and even tomatoes! I hope they leave at least something for us.
Did you see last week's Gardeners World? Monty Don was talking about plants that slugs don't like. It'll still be available on iPlayer if you missed it. I don't usually watch the show but my ears pricked up when he mentioned slugs.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to flowers I tend to stick to the ones slugs and snails avoid though last year, because of really cold winter killing off evil wildlife, I managed to grow marigolds - not this year : (
DeleteSlugs and snails are monsters. They devoured every single leaf on my redcurrant bust while I was in Corfu last month. It looks horrible but I can't cut it back or I'll have no fruit nexxt year.
ReplyDeleteHow awful - but are you sure it was slugs? There's a currant mite that will do that too and can be sprayed against.
